The Egyptian government is negotiating with residents in the northeastern Sinai Peninsula who live near the border with the Gaza Strip to leave their homes in order to establish a buffer zone along the border, a local dignitary said on Sunday.
The dignitary, who asked to remain anonymous, told Anadolu Agency that Egyptian authorities are seeking to establish a 500-meter buffer area along the 14km-long border with the Gaza Strip following a militant attack in northern Sinai earlier this week which killed at least 30 Egyptian soldiers.
