Qatar: Exploited and Sexually Abused Migrant Workers Were Forced to Run Marathon

Migrants who work under severe conditions—often akin to slavery—were forced to participate in a state-sponsored “mega-marathon” in Doha, Qatar. The marathon took place late last month at 2 p.m. on a day when the temperature reached 84 degrees. Workers were bused in and forced to run, some in jeans and flip-flops. They were told they had to finish the race in what was an effort to break the Guinness World Record for the largest marathon, which ultimately failed. According to Amnesty International, the migrant workers face extreme exploitation including physical and sexual abuse.

Qatar is on schedule to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup, despite allegations of FIFA bribery, and it has brought in migrant workers to help build sports stadiums and infrastructure. The International Trade Union Confederation has estimated that 4,000 migrant workers will die during construction.

According to the objectives listed on the race website, the mega-marathon represented “a decisive response to the campaign waged by the sector of envious haters on the success of Qatar to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and to their false allegations of persecution of workers and residents in our beloved country.”

The Daily Beast reports:

“Most migrant workers can’t leave their employer no matter what happens. They’re deportable at any moment, they’re very exploited, and it’s very difficult for them to access the justice system. When you put it together as a mix, it’s a highly toxic combination,” said McGeehan.

That’s why migrant workers who may have wanted to qui—or never even begin—the marathon may not have had an option to stop running. A spokesman for the Al-Sadd Sports Club. who bused in the runners, told the Daily Telegraph, “If they didn’t want to run, we advised them to go to their buses.” At least one witness told the Telegraph that the workers were ordered to keep running.

Al-Sadd runs the Al-Sadd Football Club, the winningest soccer team in the most competitive league in Qatar, the Qatari Stars League.

“Let’s go back to what we’re dealing with: You don’t have a choice what you’re doing—whether it’s a violation of dignity, or if it’s a danger to your welfare. If their employer wants to make them skydive, he can. That’s part of what the problem is here. This labor system enables this deathly inhumane system,” McGeehan told The Daily Beast.

Training Syrian Rebels In Qatar

At a desert base, Gulf state Qatar is covertly training Syrian rebels with U.S. help to fight both President Bashar al-Assad and ISIL, sources close to the matter say.

The camp, south of the capital between Saudi Arabia's border and Al Udeid, the largest U.S. air base in the Middle East, is being used to train the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and other moderate rebels, the sources said.

Reuters could not independently identify the participants in the programme or witness activity inside the base, which lies in a military zone guarded by Qatari special forces and marked on signposts as a restricted area.

But Syrian rebel sources said training in Qatar has included rebels affiliated to the "Free Syrian Army" from northern Syria.
The sources said the effort had been running for nearly a year, although it was too small to have a significant impact on the battlefield, and some rebels complained of not being taught advanced techniques.
The training is in line with Qatar's self-image as a champion of Arab Spring uprisings and Doha has made no secret of its hatred of Assad.
Small groups of 12 to 20 fighters are identified in Syria and screened by the Central Intelligence Agency, the sources said.

World Cup In Qatar

At least 1,200 workers enduring slave like conditions have died creating infrastructure in Qatar for the 2022 World Cup that a FIFA executive just claimed won’t be happening, although Qatari world cup chiefs refute this. Theo Zwaniger says that he does not believe Qatar’s climate is mild enough to host the event. Qatar contend that they will be able to cool the stadiums, while Zwaniger maintains that the World Cup goes on in many places other than inside the stadiums, putting tourists at risk.

Cartoon: world cup in Qatar
What’s worse is that Qatar has imported at least 90% of the workers who have been building world cup infrastructure, and dying at astounding rates of heat exhaustion and heart attacks. Workers from Nepal, Sri Lanka, India, and the Philippines were recruited in their home countries and sent to Qatar. This is an example of one of the richest countries in the world extracting slave labor from some of the poorest. Workers are caught in huge debts to these recruiters, and are living in deadly conditions, including overcrowded and filthy hostels. They endure unpaid wages, heat exhaustion, and brutality on a daily basis. One year ago, the Guardian blew the whistle on the slave like conditions workers endure in an in depth investigation.

The Spoiled Arab Oligarchs

“Wealthy bored Arab princes, typically vaguely related to the royal families of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, often have their Lamborghinis shipped over from the Gulf at enormous expense, then shipped back home just two weeks later. A UK TV station, has produced a recommended documentary about the trials of the local residents who endure this noisy spectacle each year typified by our apple-throwing activist.
Sadly – some of these kids may be learning their spoilt ways from their family members, who still sit in power as autocratic monarchs while democracy struggles to gain a foothold in one of the wealthiest regions on earth. There personal motivations can out-trump policy considerations - driven by a desire to stay in power, and age-old rivalries between the ruling families play out at a state-to-state level.
The worst current exhibitor of spoilt rich kid syndrome might well be the Bin Zayed rulers of the United Arab Emirates - who appear determined to undermine critical reconciliation efforts between the Gulf Co-Operation Council members and the Qatari royal family - a row which has been going on now for six months. This weekend, a summit is being held to try and reconcile Qatar with the other members of the GCC, a meeting which looks set to be tense - especially so thanks to the bullish rhetoric of the Bin Zayeds.”

Gaza is under fire, while Arab regimes are 'fighting' each other

Israel prefers Egyptian mediation to accomplish the truce in Gaza Strip, since the Egyptian government shares Israelis with hostility toward Hamas, but Palestinian resistance --including Hamas-- rejected the proposed Israeli-Egyptian truce, because it completely adopts Israeli demands . Meanwhile, Qatari and Turkish governments have suggested another truce's draft carries some of Palestinian demands. The Qatari-Turkish suggestion triggers anger of Egyptian government, which keeps the 'coldest' relations with Qatar after ousting former Egyptian president Mohammad Morsi. And the diplomatic Egyptian-Turkish relation has been frozen, because the Turkish government did not recognize the new Egyptian regime and considered it 'military coup'.

Israeli analysts -- as I keep observing Israeli media-- outweigh that Israel will adhere to Egyptian proposed truce for two reasons: firstly, it totally contains Israeli conditions. Secondly, to increase tension between Qatar and Egypt; consequently, to weaken the formal Arab stance toward Gaza.

In a Reuter's report : "The main protagonists are Arab heavyweight Egypt and the tiny Gulf state of Qatar, on opposite sides of a regional standoff over Hamas, the Islamist group that controls the Gaza Strip, and its ideological patron the Muslim Brotherhood"... "Egyptian officials suspect Qatar encouraged Hamas to reject a ceasefire plan Cairo put forward last week to try to end an Israeli assault that has now killed more than 500 Palestinians as well as 18 Israeli soldiers and two Israeli civilians."

Eventually, battle's results will determine the nature of truce. Apparently, current Egyptian-Israeli proposed truce will not be taken since the Israeli ground invasion failed to stop launching rockets nor to undermine Palestinian resistance.

The US administration and local events

CIA  is no longer the major player in the Arab World in comparison with both eras of Cold War and post-USSR. Nevertheless, US administration is still having the upper hand by 'managing' local proxies.

Syrian crisis alongside the abrupt rising of what-so-called Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has exposed hesitated US formal role which triggered anger of allies and reinforced the opposed alliance. Al-Qaeda local branches have been revived to become the strongest anti-government forces in Syria, Iraq and even in Lebanon --it is worthy to mention that Hezbollah participates in Lebanese government--. Al-Qaeda affiliated groups (including ISIS) are fighting against Non-Sunni regimes, but if the conflict is actual sectarian one, the Omani regime should be included since it is Non-Sunni (Abadhi) one.

Western-Iranian negotiations
Excluding two regimes, the world sigh deeply for Western-Iranian negotiations as sign of no-war status in the Middle East. Saudi Arabia and Israel have strongly opposed presumed American-Iranian 'rapprochement' and they held private and public meetings to exert pressure on the US administration against negotiations. Meanwhile, Syrian regime restored initiative against opponent militias with Iranian and Hezbollah help. The US allies realized that they must care of their interests by 'themselves' since the Americans disappointed them by undesired 'diplomatic' negotiations.

Personal hatred plays a role
It is hard to understand regional politics without the role of personal hatred among Arab rulers. Most of Arab regimes are hereditary and the dynasty is the cornerstone. If Saudi prince has dispute with another Arab ruler, bilateral formal relations (between the two states) would be worsen and the ambassadors would be withdrawn. For instance, Libyan-Saudi diplomatic relation was frozen following personal 'fight' between the former Saudi crown-prince (current king) and deceased colonel Gaddafi.

Obama's Administration has changed previous Bush's doctrine. Soft power (including drones and proxy wars) have increasingly become among facilities. New energy sources and new Non-Middle Eastern oil resources required new thinking by American think-tanks, so the result would be clear shifting from Middle East. However, Western countries are still dependent on Arab oil and the US administration is 'worry' about Chinese economic and military acceleration, so they announced that Americans will re-enforce their presence (i.e, more military bases) in the Pacific region.

So far, Qatar is the only government holding official ties with Afghanistan's Taliban (al-Qaeda twin) world widely, and played a role in prisoners exchange between the US and Taliban recently. Moreover, Qatar officially supports anti-government militias in Syria and Iraq side-by-side with Turkey and Saudi Arabia despite Qatari-Saudi disputes regarding Egypt and the formula of Syrian opposition.

The US administration left vacuum in the Arab World to be filled by local proxies in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey and Israel; al-Qaeda local branches have been revived to face Iranian influence in the region. That does not mean that the US has become 'weaker', but it is a strategic change as a result of consecutive wars, Chinese rising and the early signs of empire's deceleration.

Puffing the Venom
Encouraging sectarian conflict is a two-edge sword. It might topple Iraq's Al-Maliki for example, but puffs of venom will reach Eastern Saudi Arabia which inhabited by Shiite Muslims as well as Bahrain and Kuwait. No one can predict the results which will surely change current political and demographic maps. Saudi and Qatari media are 'celebrating' ISIS's control in Iraq (Arabic speakers can easily demonstrate these celebrations), for nothing, except because ISIS is fighting Iran's allies.

Lost amid the mess
Palestine News has the least media coverage. Beirut-based Al-Mayadeen channel might be the only pan-Arab media (as I can observe) that still put Palestine News as priority. Absurd wars have been started and no one knows the end.
