New Promising Treatment For Spine Injury

Illustration: Spine injury (Truthdig ©) |
A knife attack put Darek Fidyka on his back for two years, but an amazing medical procedure appears to have partially mended his spinal cord.

The BBC reports that researchers and doctors in the U.K. and Poland figured out how to transplant cells from Fidyka’s nose to his spine, along with a bit of nervous tissue from his ankle. The olfactory ensheathing cells taken from the nose are key, because they’re the only cells in the nervous system that regenerate as we age through adulthood.

According to the Beeb, Fidyka has a long way to go, but he can now walk with some assistance outside the hospital.

New Research : Relationship Between Curiousness And Learning

The more curious we are about a topic, the easier it is to learn information about that topic. New research publishing online October 2 in the Cell Press journal Neuron provides insights into what happens in our brains when curiosity is piqued. The findings could help scientists find ways to enhance overall learning and memory in both healthy individuals and those with neurological conditions.

Science | Windowless Planes Offer Spectacular Panorama

Technicon Design’s idea is not to ruin your views while cruising through the air, but to enhance them. This would be achieved by filming the exterior environment and displaying it on inside surfaces throughout the cabin. Rather than being restricted to a small window, passengers would experience a spectacular panoramic view of the world. Of course, it would also be possible to display other things on the screen besides the sky, such as movies.

While this may sound gimmicky, removing windows has the added benefit of weight reduction and would also simplify plane construction. It would also allow greater flexibility when designing the interior of the plane.
“The ethos of the project is simple, to challenge current thinking, and propose something a little different, but not just a fantasy,” Technicon’s Design Director Gareth Davies said in a news-release. “It has to be credible and relevant, yet provoke discussion.”
