Recent French stance toward the Syrian Crisis

Published on 16 March 2013, by M. Tomazy.
The French officials are pushing the EU to supply extra advanced arms to the Syrian rebels. Meanwhile, the US position has become closer to the Russian position by which to preserve Al-Assad in the presidency Chair till the next presidential elections and forming wide-spectrum Syrian government to prepare for the transitional period according to Geneva declaration.

The question is: Why does the French government insist to support the extremist Islamists in Syria, while they are enemies in Mali?

I think the answer is compound; the French government realized the bilateral Russian-American understanding on the Syrian crisis, therefor France wanted to shout on both countries that there is another important player who should not be ignored!
The Second reason, the historic French colonialism; the French government considers Syria and Lebanon within the foreign French vital zone of interests.
