What is the genius?

Genius is a person who has a very high (i.e. more than the smart) Intelligence Quotient (IQ).

So, in order to describe a person as "genius", he or she must gain above-smart score in the pre-existing standard IQ test. This criterion is, however, wrong.

So, what is the genius?

The genius asks simple questions which appear silly for the public (normal people).

Imagine that Newton stood at the lecture hall and asked his professor why does the apple fall on the ground? what would be the reaction of both the professor and the students? I'm pretty sure no one would like to be in his place.

The genius is someone with different (abnormal) thinking in the right direction.

Newton, for example, reversed what appeared to us as fact, and backwardly reached the gravity laws.

In his thirties, Einstein professed his revolutionary Relativity Theory. He asked himself about what seemed to normal people as a fact; why does the light velocity which is originated from moving object still stable? where does the velocity of the moving object go?

Current genius evaluation is wrong. 

There is no defined reference to evaluate the genius other than his achievement in certain field. In other words, the genius is genius within his field, but not within a category of different fields, such as mathematics and psychology, like the IQ test suggests.

Another well-known fraud is the Intelligent Mental Arithmetic (IMA) which is a program claimed to boost children's intelligence, based on Asian counting scale. It's totally based on counting and solving mathematical problems exclusively.

However, does intelligence relate to mathematics exclusively?

In fact, this type of training depends on enhancing recalling the short-term memory which with practice is saved in neurons as neuro-chemical substance and it also increase the neuronal synapses, so the enrolled child has more abilities to recall the mathematical processes due to goal-oriented exercises.

For example, a 4-year-old child plays one of sophisticated symphonies is not different than a child who solves complicated mathematical problems after enrolling the mentioned IMA.

What makes the genius so?

Besides imagination and curiosity, the genius is not distracted.

Most people are distracted and embedded within "normal" life. Some people search for the wealth, others for fame and reputation, and some people are busy making living and raising their kids.

The genius is not distracted by those things, even if he or she holds some of them. The genius finds time for observation, contemplation and thinking.

Are nerds smart?

Even though nerds do not interact socially like normal people and so they lack of  normal "social skills", they have time to think, try and imagine.

They spend more than normal people performing their hobbies; either it is video games or hacking websites.

So nerds are generally smart.

Professor Juan Cole - Exposed

Professor Juan Cole

Juan Cole is Professor of History at University of Michigan. I think he is one of well-knowledgeable Western professors on the Arab and middle eastern affairs. Nevertheless, knowledge does not determine the scientist's moral stances. For example, persons who develop biological and nuclear weapons are essentially scientists but there is a debate on their moral stances, because weapons of massive destruction are blind and do not select the targeted enemy in certain population.

I should emphasize that I have nothing to do with Professor Cole's personal affairs, but I want to expose his stances as an intellectual and scientist. Moreover, I have published two articles from his website (Informed comments).

As I followed professor Cole in Twitter, I have noticed that he retweeted a pro-GCC propaganda criticizing Hezbollah and Iran. However, he never (during the period I followed him) mentioned the Qatari role in supporting fundamental groups in the Arab world. More specifically, ISIS ideology (i.e., Wahhabism) is the same of the Qatari dynasty, and he, undoubtedly, knows they support al-Qaeda affiliated groups in Syria, Libya and Iraq. General Dempsey admitted the role of US Arab allies in supporting terrorists in Syria.

Why does professor of History at University of Michigan invite his followers to join Qatar-funded institute?

He titled a post in his "informed comments" as: "Under World Cup Pressure, Qatar reforms Guest Worker Laws, abolishes Sponsorship System" and continued to say: "Qatar, host of the 2022 football World Cup, said Wednesday it will abolish its controversial sponsorship system for foreign workers, whose treatment in the energy-rich state has stirred mounting international criticism. FIFA chief Sepp Blatter described…"

But the fact is horrific. Qatar has a black file regarding the workers' rights which reaches slavery, according the international organizations. So why he used a very soft and criticism-free language when the topic refers to the Qatari ruling dynasty?

Moreover, he posted: "Qatar is the Red Prince of the Middle East. Despite being fabulously wealthy because of its natural gas exports, its foreign policy has been populist...". populist??

By the way, my response was spontaneous with no pre-existing stances toward him. In contrast, I was one of his fans.

Unfortunately, this person who introduces himself as "Public intellectual: Global affairs, Environment, Human Rights, Progressive Politics, Poetry & Literature, Pop Culture, Spirituality", is defending one of the autocratic and totalitarian monarchy in which the dynasty spending the national wealth to support this or that militia in Syria and Libya.

He has the right to respond any way.

The 'Crude' Conspiracy Theories

Researchers have for the first time provided strong evidence for what conspiracy theorists have long thought - oil is often the reason for interfering in another country's war.

Throughout recent history, countries which need oil have found reasons to interfere in countries with a good supply of it and, the researchers argue, this could help explain the US interest in ISIS in northern Iraq.
Researchers from the Universities of Portsmouth, Warwick and Essex modelled the decision-making process of third-party countries in interfering in civil wars and examined their economic motives.
They found that the decision to interfere was dominated by the interveners' need for oil over and above historical, geographical or ethnic ties.

Civil wars have made up more than 90 per cent of all armed conflicts since World War II and the research builds on a near-exhaustive sample of 69 countries which had a civil war between 1945 and 1999. About two thirds of civil wars during the period saw third party intervention either by another country or outside organisation.

Dr Petros Sekeris, from the University Portsmouth, Dr Vincenzo Bove, from the University of Warwick, and Dr Kristian Skrede Gleditsch from the University of Essex, wanted to find out which factors made it more likely that a third party state would militarily intervene in an ongoing intrastate war.
Dr Sekeris said: "We found clear evidence that countries with potential for oil production are more likely to be targeted by foreign intervention if civil wars erupt.

"Military intervention is expensive and risky. No country joins another country's civil war without balancing the cost against their own strategic interests and what possible benefits there are.

"We wanted to go beyond conspiracy theories and conduct a careful, nuanced analysis to see whether oil acts as an economic incentive in the decision on whether to intervene in an internal war in another country.

"The results show that outsiders are much more motivated to join a fight if they have a vested financial interest."

Among the findings, published in the Journal of Conflict Resolution, are:
The more oil a country has, the more likely a third party will intervene in their civil war;
The more oil a country imports, the greater the likelihood it will intervene in an oil-producing country's civil war;

Dr Bove said: "Before the ISIS forces approached the oil-rich Kurdish north of Iraq, ISIS was barely mentioned in the news. But once ISIS got near oil fields, the siege of Kobani in Syria became a headline and the US sent drones to strike ISIS targets.

"We don't claim that our findings can be applied to every decision made on whether to intervene in another country's war, but the results clearly demonstrate supply of and demand for oil motivates a significant number of decisions taken to intervene in civil wars in the post-World War II period.

"The 'thirst for oil' is often put forward as a near self-evident explanation behind the intervention in Libya and the absence of intervention in Syria. Many claims are often simplistic but, after a rigorous and systematic analysis, we found that the role of economic incentives emerges as a key factor in intervention."

The research found that a third party country was more likely to intervene if:
They were a major power;
The rebels were strong and well-armed;
There were close ethnic ties between the two countries; and/or
The civil war took place during the Cold War, a period of global competition between superpowers.

Among the examples highlighted by the researchers were USA's involvement in Angola's civil war from 1975 to the end of the Cold War and in Guatemala, Indonesia and the Philippines, and the USA's support of conservative autocratic states in oil-rich. Also cited were the UK's involvement in Nigeria's 1967-70 civil war, in contrast to the non-intervention in civil wars in other former colonies which had no oil reserves (Sierra Leone and Rhodesia, later Zimbabwe); and the former Soviet Union's involvement in Indonesia (1958), Nigeria (1967-68) and Iraq (1973).

The researchers said that at the other end of the spectrum, oil-rich states including the Gulf States, Mexico and Indonesia have no history of military intervention in other countries' civil wars, even if they have advanced and well equipped military forces.

With the West becoming less energy-dependent and China becoming more energy-dependent, the incentives for third party countries to intervene in other countries' wars was likely to change in the future, they said.

Racism And Islamophobia Among Canadian Intellectuals

I didn't expect such amount of racism and Islamophobia written by Canadian blogger (who I used to admire and regularly read his blog). The following paragraphs are quoted.

...To that end, a bit of intolerance may not be a bad thing if the alternative is disruption to our whole way of life. For example, perhaps we should simply outlaw Islam. After all, how many Canadians really want to live next door to a polygamous family of armed terrorists whose women dress in tents.

 That being the case, my argument for barring Muslims from immigrating to Canada and for banning the preaching of Islam in Canada stands. Not that I have anything personally against moderate Muslims in Canada some of whom I know personally and whom I regard as fine people. But Islam is not merely a religion is also a political system and the assumption that Western Muslims can be tamed to the point that their religion is as meaningless as Episcopalianism or Anglicanism is unwarranted.
Given the chance, Muslims will always turn aggressively political and seek to dominate the society in which they live. Anyone in Canada who doubts this should listen to Shahid Malik, Britain's Justice Minister in the government of Tony Blair.
